Youth Conservation Crew Lead
WRTC’s Youth Conservation Crew (YCC) program has been in operation since 2001 and is an official Youth Conservation Corps. WRTC’s YCC program focuses on natural resource education, and crew members gain experience implementing a variety of stewardship projects. This field work includes but is not limited to:● trail maintenance and construction
● meadow and stream restoration
● noxious weed treatments (primarily weed pulling)
● field surveys with natural resource professionals (i.e. wildlife surveys)
● prescribed fire implementation
● data collection and management
WRTC supports two YCC programs, one based in Hayfork and the other in Weaverville.
The primary function of the YCC Lead position is to mentor and lead the crew members, demonstrating to young adults what it takes to hold a job including: dependability, attendance, work ethic, stewardship and respect. YCC Leads are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of each YCC, each crew is staffed by 5 high school aged young adults. Duties include facilitating job readiness and skill building, conflict management, and ensuring quality project work. The Crew Lead is also responsible for tracking data and documenting completed miles/units/tasks, making decisions in the field, hazard identification and mitigation, and the overall safety of the Crew.
