2006 Thenmala, Kerala, India
Role: Project Head
A Butterfly Safari was established in a 3.5 ha degraded forest area within the Thenmala Ecotourism project area to generate public awareness on biodiversity conservation, environmental education of the public especially the students and to generate income. The garden was set up on either side of a nature trail paved with laterite stones. The existing vegetation was kept intact and additional plants that support caterpillars (larval host plants) as well as nectar plants to sustain butterflies were introduced. Plants were introduced in tiers to cater to the butterflies that fly at different elevations.
