Accommodating Bicyclists and Pedestrians in Construction Areas: Making Work Zones Work for Everyone

Webinar

Developed by the ITE Complete Streets Council.

While detailed standards and guidelines have long existed for how to handle vehicle traffic through work zones, bicyclists and pedestrians are frequently left to fend for themselves when sidewalks are closed or bike lanes disappear during construction. To maintain vehicle capacity, bicycle facilities are often the first thing to go when the adjacent lot is under construction. However, many agencies are no longer accepting "Share the Road" signs and long, inaccessible pedestrian detours around the block as acceptable treatment for the more vulnerable roadway users.

This webinar will dive into the practices that some agencies are implementing to ensure access and connectivity is maintained for all. This includes minimizing detours, trading off vehicle lanes for pedestrian and bicycle space, and using creative staging to maintain an accessible path of travel. Our presenters will give first hand accounts of how they are prioritizing bicyclist and pedestrian access and safety in work zones through policies, plans, and on-the ground implementation.
