Part two of a two-part series related to sustainability, this webinar aims to introduce you to the fundamentals of managing a sustainable horse farm and will delve deeper into environmentally sustainable trail building and maintenance for equestrian use. In the first webinar of our two-part series on sustainable horse trails (held August 1, 2024 titled Barn to Trail: Managing Sustainability on Equine Properties), ELCR explored the sustainable management of equine properties and examined private and local trail systems adjacent to these properties. In the second webinar, we will delve deeper into environmentally sustainable trail building and maintenance for equestrian use.
Attendees will learn about the American Trails Legacy Trails Grant Program and see how the Back Country Horsemen of the Virginia Highlands and the Back Country Horsemen of Washington utilized this funding to support projects that sustain and improve equestrian trails in their regions. We will focus on the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail Project and the Pasayten Wilderness Project in Washington, using these examples to highlight key issues in trail maintenance and sustainability while offering common solutions to challenges that may arise on equestrian trails.
Learning Objectives:
- Attendees will learn about the American Trails Legacy Trails Grant Program and how it can be applied to sustainability projects on equestrian trails.
- Attendees will learn about key aspects of trail maintenance, including water and erosion management, to ensure trail tracks that can withstand equine use.
- Attendees will learn about the unique considerations for equines on trails pertaining to safety and environmental impact.

Learning Credits and CEUs

Learning credits will be available to attendees and are included in the registration fee. The length of the session will determine the number of hours/credits given. In order to obtain credits, attendees must fill out an evaluation survey for each session they attend, as well as complete a learning credit tracking form noting each session they are requesting credits for (or a quiz if virtual). This form (and complete instructions) will be available online as well at registration. Email the conference host or [email protected] with any questions.
American Trails is a certified provider and can offer the following learning credits and continuing education opportunities: AICP CM, LA CES (most HSW approved), NRPA CEU Equivalency Petition, and CEU/PDH Equivalency Petition for other accepting organizations.
