2014 South Hills, Charleston, WV
Role: Trail Planner, Designer, Builder. Maintenance now done by others.
The Wallace Hartman Nature Preserve was another early West Virginia Land Trust preserve. Located in the South Hills area of South Charleston, the preserve has several miles of trails designed for foot traffic but allowing mountain bikes. The property was donated to the Land Trust by Dolly Hartman and is enjoyed by the local residents and others from around Charleston. The property could support more trail mileage if it were to expand. The forest is beautiful, mature mixed-mesophytic 'cove hardwoods of oak, poplar, maple, basswood, hickory, magnolia, black gum, and even a small pine plantation. The trails were either existing (and old wagon route) or were built by staff and volunteers. Two local volunteers do the brushing.
